A new method for tracking particles from in-line holograms by using Wigner–Ville distribution is proposed. In comparison with the Wigner distribution, the proposed method has higher measurement accuracy. The experimental results show that the error in measurements of the axial position of the object depends mainly on the resolution of image sensor.
► Holographic particle tracking by using Wigner–Ville distribution (WVD) is proposed.
► Unlike the Wigner distribution, the WVD is free from frequency artifact.
► The proposed method is experimentally verified by using holograms of optical fiber.
► Digitally recorded holograms are transformed into analytic signal by using Matlab.
► Accuracy of the proposed method depends mainly on a resolution of image sensor.
