A cheap and simple nonenzymatic device has been developed based on direct precipitation of manganese oxide (MnO2) onto screen-printed carbon electrode, for sensitive detection of some xenoestrogens. MnO2 catalyst possessed strong activity in promoting phenol oxidation, offering great promise for a new class of nonenzymatic sensors and energy conversion applications. The MnO2 based sensor showed good performances for amperometric determination of 4-t-butylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol and 4-n-nonylphenol. When phenol was used as reference compound, a specific sensitivity of 123 mA M−1 cm−2 and a detection limit of 0.64 μM, with a linear range extended up to 716 μM were obtained for MnO2 based sensor. By using this simple, cheap and sensitive disposable sensor, the developed method can be applied for direct determination of total content of these xenoestrogens in water samples.
