Low hardness on bearing race—An investigation

• Low hardness was found on one of the faces of an outer race of a bearing.
• Decarburization layer was found to be present in the defective race causing the low hardness.
• Faulty forging process and heat treatments were found to be probable reasons for such decarburization.
