Chemotaxonomic significance and biosynthesis of selaginellin from Selaginella tamariscina

► A known natural pigment named selaginellin together with a known biflavonoid was isolated from Selaginella tamariscina. ► The possible biosynthesis path way of selaginellin derivatives was firstly proposed. ► Chemotaxonomic significance of the compounds obtained was discussed.
