Description of microsatellite markers in four mullids based on the development and cross-species amplification of 18 new markers in red mullet (Mullus barbatus)

► Eighteen microsatellite markers were developed for the red mullet (Mullus barbatus). ► The loci are polymorphic to different extent in four different Mullidae species. ► All five species were polymorphic for at least 12 markers. ► Loci could be used to perform genetic assessments among co-occurring Mullidae species.
