Microsatellite analysis reveals the population structure and migration patterns of Scomber japonicus (Scombridae) with continuous distribution in the East and South China Seas

► We analysed genetic diversity and population structure of six populations of Scomber japonicus. ► 169 individuals were analysed and 11 microsatellite markers were used. ► Population structure analyses suggested the existence of two divergent stocks. ► Migration analysis revealed a preferential migration dispersion pattern for S. japonicus in ECS. ► S. japonicus had not undergone recent genetic bottlenecks.
