Exploiting the lipoic acid structure in the search for novel multitarget ligands against Alzheimer's disease

► Lipoic acid is a natural antioxidant with neuroprotective effects. ► We developed new lipoic acid hybrids as anti-Alzheimer lead candidates. ► Synthesized compounds were tested for their multitarget profile. ► Lipoic acid stereochemistry did not significantly affect the biological activity. ► Compound 4 exhibited anticholinesterase and antioxidant capacities.
