In the proposal for modern power systems with automatic generation control (AGC) the controller suggested is, a Two- Degree-of-Freedom PID (2-DOF-PID) controller. The proposed controller, for the first time, is tested on two unequal area thermal systems considering boiler dynamics as well as governor dead band non-linearity. The concurrent optimization of numerous parameters of the controllers is achieved by Differential Evolution Algorithm (DE) and the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) is the implemented objective function. Experimental result evidently conceals the dominance of the 2-DOF-PID controller considering transient behaviour and time required for stabilizing the system. Current research analyse the usefulness of the Differential Evolution algorithm as a technique for deriving the optimum controller parameter values. Sensitivity analysis for diverse load settings justifies sturdiness of 2-DOF-PID controller. Furthermore, the simple PID controller used abundantly in industries is compared with the of the performance of proposed controller.
