Cutting vibration is unavoidable during a machining process and has great impact on the machined surface. With the increase of the demand on the high quality of surface finish, the effects of cutting vibration on surface generation attract a lot of attentions. In this effort, one method accurately measuring the vibrational displacements of tool and workpiece is proposed and employed in signal acquisition. Based on the measured vibrational displacement signals of tool and workpiece, a geometric peripheral milling model and surface profile generation algorithm are presented. That is different from the former researches, where, vibrations predicted by cutting process dynamics or virtual vibrations have been used. The surface topography is also reconstructed by using measured vibration signals and compared with the exactly machined surface. In addition, the effects of cutting vibration are also analyzed. Results show that the reconstructed surface profile gives a good agreement with the exactly one, and the vibration plays the major role in the surface generation with given cutting parameters.
