When defining an average stress criterion for the free edges delamination initiation in composite laminates, assumptions have to be made with regard to the average interlaminar normal stress contribution. These assumptions have an influence on the formulation of the postulated criterion. Loading an interface in tension or in compression gives rise to, respectively, compressive or tensile normal stresses superimposed to the interlaminar shear stresses. Thus, an experimental process allowing interface loading under uniform stress field—either tensile or compressive—would be very helpful. As far as we know, no classical compression test allows delamination to he reached. In this study, a four point bending tea on a sandwich beam has been designed in order to load the +θ/−θ interface of the [θ/−θ]s composite skin either with a tensile or a compressive uniform stress field. Additional tests on [152/90/−152]s and [30/90/−302]s laminates show that this test could be very helpful for delamination studies.
