• Discrete phosphorescent oxygen sensors integrated in polymeric film substrates.
• Incorporation of sensor dye by solvent crazing method on puncture test machine.
• Continuous production of discrete O2 sensors.
• Sensors exhibit useful working characteristics, no cross-sensitivity to humidity or dye leaching.
• Sensors can be incorporated into packaging materials and protected by heat-sealing.
A new method for incorporating luminescent dye into polyphenylenesulphide (PPS) films by localised solvent crazing was developed using an automated puncture test instrument. The fabricated sensors displayed sensitivity over 0–100 kPa O2 range, high brightness, linear Stern–Volmer plots, low temperature dependence and low cross-sensitivity to humidity. In addition, the sensors exhibited no leaching into food simulants and can be integrated into current food packaging materials. This approach allows continuous production of discrete O2 sensors and their integration in packaging materials.
