Ciliate dependent production of microbial anthranilic acid occurring within aspen litter

► Ciliates modified microbial communities by limiting the growth of gram negative bacteria. ► Ciliates did not stimulate plant auxin production, but increased the amount of anthranilic acid. ► The protist indicator PLFA 20:4 was not detected even when ciliates were observed with direct count.
