High diversity of small organic N observed in soil water

► With the exception of amino acids little is known about small organic N in soil water. ► CE-MS was used to profile organic N molecules <250 Da in soil water. ► CE-MS detected 100 organic molecules, with 58 positively identified. ► Soil water contained large amounts of quaternary ammonium compounds.
