Communication entre infirmières et proches aidants de personnes âgées hospitalisées à risque de délirium postopératoire : une étude de cas multiples

Nurses and carers play an important role in implementing measures to prevent delirium. Good communication between these groups of people is essential. A multiple case study aimed to provide greater understanding of the communication between the nurses and carers of elderly people hospitalised on a cardiac surgery unit and at risk of delirium. Circular communication as described by Wright and Leahey (2014) served as a reference framework for this study. In addition to meeting needs and respect, openness and humanism in the care provided to the elderly patient, the results highlight that the presence of carers with the elderly person and their confidence in the nursing care, which may be affected by their past experiences of hospital stays, influence their communication with nurses. Nurses are encouraged to communicate effectively with all types of carers of hospitalised elderly people in order to improve the quality and safety of the care provided.
