Executive summaryThere is a lot of talk about employees being an important asset for driving business success; however, the question not answered is “What is it about employees that is critical for driving firm growth, innovation and high performance?” In this paper, that question is answered, and it is done by focusing on a simple, easy and fast method of measuring, optimizing and directing employee energy. Why energy? The answer lies in a large body of research focused on the drivers of individual and firm performance. Energy is the ability to do work, and firms that optimize and direct employee energy to meet critical goals create long-term competitive advantage that drives sustained growth. The research learning on energy is highlighted, and lessons from firms that have been measuring and managing energy are shared in an effort to help leaders understand how to use energy as a leadership tool.
