Today's large emerging markets present a unique challenge for multinational companies: their scale is larger and the global business environment is much more dynamic than ever has been seen before. The challenges of managing the innovation process in these markets that are at early stages of economic development argue for a bifurcated strategy, with one general strategy for developed economy markets and a separate strategy for the large emerging markets. From an organization design perspective, an emerging-markets specific approach is also needed: the mix of products that need to be supported, the scale and complexity of the markets, and the unique challenges around developing and managing local talent together create the need for locally based decision rights and the structures and processes needed to support those decision rights.
