Arterial catheters have the same yield when they are maintained with heparinized saline or with 0.9% saline. Therefore, we believe that nonheparinized saline should be used. Moreover, nonheparinized saline allows extraction of blood samples for coagulation tests and reduces the potential risks of heparin use.
