STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT OF THE URETHRAL SPHINCTER IN WOMEN WITH URINARY RETENTION

To our knowledge this is the first morphological description of the urethral rhabdosphincter in a subgroup of women with urinary retention. Mean rhabdosphincter fiber diameter was approximately the same in patients and controls. This study does not support the previous theory that urethral sphincter overactivity in a subgroup of women with urinary retention leads to work hyperplasia of urethral rhabdosphincter fibers. An alternative hypothesis is suggested.
