Zespół żółtych paznokci u piętnastoletniej dziewczynki: opis przypadku i przeglÄ d piśmiennictwa

The yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disease. To date, there have been approximately 200 cases reported in the literature. YNS was first described in 1964 by Samman and White. Even though the pathogenesis of YNS is not well known, it is believed that the syndrome may occur due to a structural and functional dysfunction of the lymphatic system. Yellow nail syndrome may be associated with autoimmune diseases and malignancies. There have been only a few published reports where familial occurrence of YNS has been reported. YNS is characterized by yellow-green discoloration of the nails, respiratory manifestations and lymphoedema. The syndrome usually presents between the fourth and sixth decades of life. The observation of YNS in the pediatric population is extremely rare. In his report, the authors present a case of 15-year-old girl with YNS. At thirteen years of age, she was diagnosed with chronic eosinophilic bronchitis. After a few months some changes in nails had been noticed. Physical examination showed nails dystrophy in hands and feet characterized by yellow discoloration, thickened and transverse ridging. After a few days the patient was hospitalized again, this time with headache, imbalance and double vision. Based on MRI test result SM has been diagnosed. According to our knowledge this is the first case for coexistence of YNS and SM.
