Food protein-induced proctocolitis is a cell-mediated allergic inflammatory process involving the rectum and usually the distal part of sigmoid colon. The disease occurs both in formula-fed children as well as in breastfed infants. The symptoms are usually mild and self-limited, manifested by the presence of a small amount of blood in the stool. The disease is most often caused by hypersensitivity to cow's milk protein. Diagnosis is based on the finding of typical symptomatology after ingestion of certain food and the only diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in the majority of patients is the use of a non-dairy elimination diet. Severe course of this illness or the lack of improvement after applying of non-dairy diet requires further diagnostics and allows the temporary use of elementary diet.
