The essence of the disorder is a fear about being separated from a close person to whom a child is emotionally attached. A separation anxiety comes from apprehension of being separated from the meaningful person, in most cases a mother. The distinctive feature is incompatibility with the developmental stage. Fear of separation appears with an unusual intensity and it lasts longer than expected for the typical age range. This leads to disorders in a child's social functioning. Separation anxiety of a meaningful intensity and in compatible with current social needs prevents young people from passing through consecutive stages of development as adults persons who suffered separation anxiety in childhood often achieve a low level of education and some of them will have to deal with permanent problems, and only less than a half will achieve a proper social adaptation level. Anxiety disorders in childhood (e.g. separation anxiety) may lead to other disorders in adulthood most frequently to panic disorders and agoraphobia. Treatment of separation anxiety requires cooperation among a psychologist a psychiatrist, the school, and parents, such treatment is a long-lasting process.
