Recanalization and flow regulate venous thrombus resolution and matrix metalloproteinase expression in vivo

Incomplete thrombus resolution after deep venous thrombosis is important in the development of post-thrombotic syndrome. This study directly examines the role of ongoing blood flow and recanalization in the resolution of deep venous thrombosis in vivo. We find that the presence of ongoing blood flow enhances thrombus resolution and is associated with expression of key matrix metalloproteinases in areas of recanalization within the thrombus. These findings help define the physiology of thrombus resolution and provide potential therapeutic targets to accelerate this clinically important process for patients with deep venous thrombosis.
