► Image analysis of SEM images was used in iron ore green pellets. ► Image analysis enables quantitative size distribution of bubble cavities in pellets. ► MIP is not useful for characterization of bubble cavities in iron ore green pellets. ► The amount of bubble cavities in pellets was higher when flotation reagent was added.
