► A wet coefficient of restitution model is implemented in an open-source DEM tool. ► DEM studies are performed to study the effect of liquid coating on fluidized beds. ► The effect of coating viscosity and thickness on fluidization behavior is studied. ► Fluidization behavior is changed and slugs are formed as viscosity is increased. ► A wet coefficient of restitution and relative collision velocity are quantified.
