► Surfaces with rose petal effect were made with ZnO nanoparticles on micropatterns. ► Wettability was examined with varying pitch and nanostructure density. ► Wettability was compared using hydrophilic vs. hydrophobic nanostructure. ► Wear resistance of surfaces was studied with an AFM wear experiment.
