Drinking motives, protective behavioral strategies, and experienced consequences: Identifying students at risk

► Conformity motives were associated with more protective behavioral strategies (PBS). ► Enhancement and social motives predicted less frequent PBS use. ► More PBS was associated with consuming less alcohol and having fewer problems. ► PBS led to fewer problems, especially with greater coping and conformity motives.
