► Lower birth weight was associated with an increased risk of PTSD diagnosis in trauma exposed adults. ► Lower birth weight was not associated with other DSM-IV anxiety disorders. ► Birth weight was not associated with exposure to trauma. ► It remains possible that the association is partly due to residual maternal or environmental factors.
