Effects of responsibility and mood on painful task persistence

► Mood-as-input predictions did not apply to a painful physical task. ► Participants induced with a negative mood spent more time at the painful task. ► Sense of responsibility was associated with painful task persistence. ► Pain increase during task execution was associated with longer task persistence, execution speed and quality of performance. ► Fear-related pain did not affect task persistence.
