Challenges to the traditional exposure paradigm: Variability in exposure therapy for contamination fears

► We evaluate whether traditional exposure is needed to achieve clinical improvement. ► First, we compare blocked and constant exposure to random and variable exposure. ► Both types of exposure produce decreases in subjective fear. ► We also examine fear habituation and variability in relation to outcome. ► Greater variability in reported fear in exposure predicts lower fear at follow-up.
