Reduced intrusion development after post-trauma imagery rescripting; an experimental study

► Distress was lower during Imagery Rescripting (IRS) and Positive Imagery (PI) than during Imagery reexperiencing (IRE). ► Post-film IRS resulted in fewer intrusive memories of the film in the subsequent week than IRE and PI. ► Enhanced recall did not explain intrusion frequency differences: Both IRS and IRE lead to enhanced cued recall. ► Participants in the IRS group experienced less negative cognitions in the week after the film than those in the IRE group.
