The effects of severity and causal explanation on social perceptions of hair loss

► We examined the role of cause and severity in perceptions of hair loss. ► Hairpulling was rated more negatively than a non-explanation. ► Severe hair loss and hairpulling were each associated with more negative perceptions. ► When hair loss was minimal or moderate, hairpulling was perceived most negatively. ► When loss was severe, hairpulling and non-explanations were rated more negatively.
