Cognitive task performance causes impaired maximum force production in human hand flexor muscles

► We investigate effects of cognitive effort expenditure on intermittent maximum voluntary contraction force production. ► Maximal handgrip force production decreased linearly over 22-min of cognitive performance. ► We conclude that expenditure of cognitive effort imparts negative effects on muscle force production.
