► Direct gaze is detected faster than averted gaze under unconscious processing. ► This is found by using schematic faces without salient eye whites. ► Such direct-gaze facilitation effect requires the eye region only. ► Neither facial-expression effect nor its interaction with gaze is found. ► This is caused by the absence of low-level features or holistic process.
