The Rubber Hand Illusion: Two's a company, but three's a crowd

► We re-evaluate the possibility of generalizing ownership to multiple rubber hands. ► We used the classical rubber hand set-up. ► Only the closest rubber hand appears objectively and subjectively embodied. ► Synchronous touch of a farther rubber hand disrupted the objective illusion. ► The distance of two rubber hands from subject's hand must be equal to elicit the illusion. ► Boundaries of our body are vague: there is a prototypical body and a borderline body.
