► Time series and surveys of support for war (Korea and Vietnam) are examined. ► The prospect of victory affected wartime morale in both cases. ► It did so regardless of elite cues such as partisanship. ► Casualties left only a weak imprint on popular support for those wars. ► When the prospect of victory collapsed, so did wartime morale.
