Free-standing polypyrrole films as substrate-free and Pt-free counter electrodes for quasi-solid dye-sensitized solar cells

► Free-standing polypyrrole films with improved electrocatalytic activity are synthesized. ► A low charge transfer resistance at electrolyte/PPy interface is obtained. ► DSSCs fabricated using freestanding polypyrrole films exhibit an efficiency of 3.5%.
