Reactivity of nitrilotriacetic acid with polypyridyl protected as well as naked copper(II) nitrate

► Reactivity of nitrilotriacetic acid with copper salts have been studied. ► Two types of complexes are obtained in one pot synthesis. ► Complexes are characterized using spectroscopic and X-ray techniques. ► DFT calculations suggested that copper activates oxalato complex formation.
