Ion-pair 2a is more reactive towards initial monomer insertion in the presence of excess borane and the product of chain transfer is borohydride complex 5a. Both this complex and ion-pair 2a are reactive towards the unsaturated oligomers formed, slowly forming oligomeric π-allyl complexes 4a via a C-H activation reaction.
