Chemical scent constituents in feces of wild Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus)

► In spite of the importance of feces in scent marking and intraspecific chemical communication of many mammals, only a few studies have examined the chemical constituents of feces that could have a signaling function. ► In this manuscript, we described the chemicals found in feces recently deposited in the wild by adult and pup Iberian wolves. ► This is important because if feces have a scent-marking function, it is important to know which chemicals are actually found in feces after they have been deposited in the wild, and not only those chemicals found in fresh secretions from captive animals. ► Our analyses suggest that chemicals in feces could function as potential chemosignals in intraspecific communication of wolves. We think that this article will be of interest for researchers working on chemical ecology with any taxa.
