Thermo-stamping is a promising process for the manufacture of woven fabric composites due to its relatively low cost and high production rate. However, more research on this process, such as material property characterization, FEA simulation and failure criteria is needed. Analytical modeling of the material properties of woven fabrics is then very desirable because experimental investigation of every woven fabric is not practical due to geometric complexity and labor intensity. In this paper, picture frame experimental results of two glass/polypropylene commingled woven fabrics were presented. A picture frame model was developed to account for the large shear deformation and to calculate the stress and stiffness of the fabrics. An analytical solid mechanics model was also proposed to predict the shear properties of woven fabrics and reduce or ultimately eliminate the need for fabric-level experimental characterization. To complete this model, a proper prediction of the frictional resistance is required, which will be addressed in a future paper.
