Mechanical properties of friction stir butt welds of high nitrogen-containing austenitic stainless steel

▶ Friction stir butt welding was applied to high nitrogen-containing stainless steel. ▶ Ni free austenitic stainless steel containing 1 mass% nitrogen plates were used. ▶ To determine the optimum welding conditions, some welding conditions were applied. ▶ The effect of the heat input on the mechanical properties of the joints was studied. ▶ The relationship of the welding temperature and the microstructure was investigated.
