Crack branching instability and directional stability in dynamic fracture of a tough bulk metallic glass

► We achieve the dynamic fracture of a tough bulk metallic glass. ► We observe a fractographic evolution: vein pattern, chevron and crack microbranching. ► We determine the terminal crack velocity for the onset of microbranching instability. ► The dynamic branched daughter cracks exhibit “directional stability”.
