Formation and coupling of band gaps in a locally resonant elastic system comprising a string with attached resonators

► We examine band gaps in a special one-dimensional locally resonant system. ► Bragg and resonance gaps co-exist. ► Explicit formulas for locating band edges are derived. ► Exact physical models are used to clarify the band gap formation mechanisms. ► Coupling between Bragg and resonance gaps leads to a super-wide gap.
