► Fleahoppers belong to the most destructive insect pests of cotton in the US. ► Concerns over human safety and the disruptive nature of insecticides exist. ► Alternate means of control necessitate knowledge of the basic physiological properties. ► We identified by mass spectrometry fleahopper-specific peptide hormones. ► Findings may help developing mimetica capable of disrupting physiological functions.
