Antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone displays antifungal activity, induces irregular calcium response and intracellular acidification of Aspergillus niger - Amiodarone targets calcium and pH homeostasis of A. niger

► A mode of action of amiodarone for filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger is proposed. ► The effect of amiodarone on intracellular calcium kinetics and pH was analyzed. ► Calcium ATPase pmrAΔ and pmcAΔ mutants are hypersensitive to amiodarone. ► Hypersensitivity correlates with cytosolic calcium resting level. ► Irregular [Ca2+]c and intracellular acidification decrease cell viability.
