Ex vivo generation of a highly potent population of circulating angiogenic cells using a collagen matrix

► In this study, we cultured circulating angiogenic cells on a collagen matrix. ► Culture on matrix was compared with the more traditional fibronectin culture method. ► Differentiation of CD31+CD144+ and CD133+CD34+ cells was enhanced on matrix. ► Functional superiority of these cells was associated with ERK and Akt pathways. ► Matrix-raised cells induced angiogenic cytokines and restored hindlimb perfusion.
