Muscular load and performance compared between a pen and a computer mouse as input devices
چکیده انگلیسی

The aim of this experimental study was to compare a pen to a computer mouse as an alternative input device while taking learning effects into consideration. 20 subjects performed a test program (single/double click and drag and drop) with each device on five consecutive days. For performance, time to complete the tasks was measured. After five days, performance differed significantly with F = 204.4 and p < 0.01 between mouse and pen use. According to this performance measure, the mouse is the better choice. Learning progress in using mouse and pen was described with a simple logarithmic model, where the pen showed significantly greater improvement in performance.Surface electromyography on the Trapezius muscle showed no differences between the two devices. The perceived muscle exertion, measured with the Borg CR10-scale, did not differ significantly between mouse and pen use.Based on the findings of this study, the mouse seems to be the better device, but considering the learning effects, neither device can be called generally superior.Relevance to industryRecent increases in the number of employees working with computers and in the duration of computer and mouse use coincide with increased prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and sick leave, which pose financial burdens on companies. Research in alternative input devices that could reduce the risk factors for disorders is relevant for these companies.
