Las empresas metalgráficas en Galicia (1890–1936)

ResumenEl objetivo del presente artículo es analizar el papel de las empresas metalgráficas en Galicia. La metalgrafía es una actividad que ha pasado prácticamente desapercibida para la historia económica, a pesar de haber jugado un papel clave en el desarrollo y la competitividad de las conservas de pescado, sector en el que durante mucho tiempo estuvo basada la industrialización gallega. Precisamente, el hecho de considerar a las metalgráficas como una simple actividad auxiliar de la industria conservera ha tendido a ocultar su carácter de empresas especializadas en la producción del envase moderno. Una clave sin la cual no se puede entender como, aún hoy en día, sociedades herederas de las establecidas a comienzos de siglo ocupan posiciones de liderazgo en el sector del envase. Se analizan los factores que dieron lugar a la aparición de las metalgráficas en las décadas de entre siglos, su concentración en Vigo, y los factores que incidieron en su especialización a lo largo de las distintas etapas hasta el inicio de la Guerra Civil.

This paper aims to analyze the role of metal graphic companies in Galicia. Metal graphic is an activity that has gone virtually unnoticed in economic history, despite having played a key role in the development and competitiveness of the canned fish sector, which for many years was the basis of the industrialization of Galicia. In fact, considering the metal graphic companies as a mere auxiliary activity of the canning industry has tended to conceal their characteristics as companies specialising in the production of modern packaging. This is a key factor without which it is impossible to understand how even today heirs to these companies established in the early part of the century still occupy a leading position in the packaging sector. The factors that led to the appearance of metallographic companies, their concentration in Vigo, and the factors which influenced their specialization throughout the various stages until the onset of the civil war are analyzed.
