• Thermodynamic study for four ternary oxides PbMoO4, PbMo2O7, Pb2MoO5 and PbMo3O10 was reported for the first time.
• Mass spectrometric Knudsen-cell method and quantum chemical calculations were combined for the thermodynamic study of the oxides.
• Formation enthalpies, molecular structures and ionisation energies for the ternary oxides are reported for the first time.
The formation and stability of the ternary lead-molybdenum oxides PbMoO4, PbMo2O7, PbMo3O10 and Pb2MoO5 in the gas phase were studied. The PbMoO4 and PbMo2O7 species were unequivocally identified in mass spectrometric experiments by the determination of m/z-values, isotopic patterns and appearance energies. Presumably, the PbMo3O10 and Pb2MoO5 species were also present in the gas phase. Thermodynamic data for the ternary oxides were obtained experimentally by means of a mass spectrometric Knudsen-cell method and were confirmed by quantum chemical calculations.
