Nonylphenol: An overview and its determination in oysters and wastewaters and preliminary degradation results from laboratory experiments

An introduction and background to nonylphenol is presented. A brief review of instrumentation and selected results of nonylphenol determination is provided. A comprehensive description of our laboratory experience in nonylphenol determination from raw oysters and wastewater is presented, including extraction and pre-concentration. Results of the determination of nonylphenol in oysters collected from a lake in Southwest Louisiana showed that none was detected. Nonylphenol was found in UV treated wastewaters. Preliminary results on laboratory generated reaction of nonylphenol in water with chlorine and hydrochloric acid showed a decrease in nonylphenol.
